Nailab : Nairobi Incubation Laboratory

Just made a video today for my friend Tonee Ndungu and his great project the Nailab (Nairobi Incubation Laboratory) an incubator straight across the corridor of the *IHub_ for which I officially work. So the video says it all, but it will be much more a "start-up farm" more than an "innovation laboratory" to my sense. One of the greatest challenges of the Nailab is going to define its strategy to complement - and not overlap - with what the *IHub_ (that was built before specifically for innovation) in order to establish a symbiotic relation. Best luck to both sister projects !!!

M-PESA is a Safaricom service allowing you to transfer money using a mobile phone. Kenya is the first country in the world to use this service, which is offered in partnership between Safaricom and Vodafone. M-PESA is available to all Safaricom subscribers (Prepay and Postpay), even if you do not have a bank account. Registration is FREE and available at any M-PESA Agent countrywide. The M-PESA application is installed on your SIM card and works on all makes of handsets.

Amazing. Told you, the future is here in Nairobi.

*IHub_[under_construction]

The *IHub_ is now at full speed under construction, it is quite impressive to be in the middle of so many computers, metal and wood works, dust, ideas, sweat, sketches, phewww! Energy! I'm proud to be responsible of this construction site, fingers crossed it goes well until the end.

World Environment Action (WEA) website pre-release

http://w-e-a.org

The World Environment Action (WEA) has now a website. Soon there will be an Ushahidi app hosted here and an alpha release of the WEA for mobile device should follow.
Yesterday I presented the WEA at the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) in Nairobi and had very interesting feedbacks. Download the presentation (.pdf 6mb).

AkiraChix in da house

The geekiest girls of Kenya is right under your eyes (+1 lucky stalker heheh) meeting @*IHub. Here you got Angela NicoleLillian Nduati, Linnet Quamboka, Judith Adem Owigar, Muthoni, Jessica Colaco. I must soon do their logo inspired from Carol hairstyle (!!!). The group is called Akirachix (Akira + Chicks) and is under construction too, but the idea is to empower Kenyan tech-ladies to take over and help each other. Nice initiative of the fantabulous Jessica Colaco (TED Fellow 2009), meeting once every 15 days or so. Pretty nerdy round here O_O ;p

Join the Facebook group and follow them here:

World Environment Action, draft video

Right now I am at the IHub in the vibrant Nairobi Kenya, building the prototype of the World Environment Action (WEA) website (soon on-line). The idea is to "Puts every local initiative and its global impact on the same map". Based on Ushahidi, we want to create a powerful crowd-sourcing database to empower the transformation of the United Nation Environmental Program (UNEP) based here in Nairobi, into the the World Environment Organization (WEO, that doesn't exist yet) and re-think global environmental governance in a more distributed and efficient way, a bottom up approach, for people, for nature.

I just made the concept video draft above, it is very sketchy : I NEED YOUR FEEDBACK -> PLEASE COMMENT.
I am not presenting you something finished, I want to know how you feel about the idea, the system, the interface, your comments will greatly shape the proposal.
You can also flick through the slideshow on the original google docs right here : http://tinyurl.com/WEO-nairobi
In about 10 days I will present a more detailed proposal, a mockup and a business plan to the head of the UNDP and at the UNEP. Thank you very much for your time.

When the whole thing is done I will upload on my google 3d Warehouse user page, stay tuned if you want to use the 3D model for organizing events at the *IHub. Real construction of these 3D models happening right now.
